The National Food Authority may resell at a lower price some 1,300 metric tons of rice seized from alleged smugglers off Zamboanga Sibugay, Malacañang said Monday.

The Philippine Navy confiscated the grain, worth P68 million, from a foreign vessel late Saturday.

"Puwede po iyang ibenta as NFA rice, iyung cheap rice para ma-increase ang stockpile ng NFA," Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in a press briefing.

(That can be sold as NFA rice, cheap rice to increase the stockpile of NFA.)

The NFA had said that its buffer stock of government-subsidized rice was running low.

The grains agency and its policy-making body, the NFA Council, will meet with President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday, said Roque.

Duterte earlier this month floated the idea of scrapping the NFA Council headed by Cabinet Secretary Leoncio Evasco to fast-track the importation of rice.

The issue may be tackled in Duterte's meeting with the council, Roque said.
