PAO says slain Cebu teen was raped
Christine Lee Silawan, a 16-year-old girl found dead with her face peeled off in Cebu province last month, was raped, the Public Attorney's Office (PAO) said Thursday, contradicting initial police findings.
The Lapu-Lapu City Police Office last month was quoted as saying the Grade 9 student might not have been raped, based on the findings of its crime laboratory.
Silawan's mother rejected the finding and requested PAO to conduct a re-autopsy, said agency chief Persida Rueda-Acosta.
Using macrophotographic lenses, PAO experts found abrasions and multiple hematoma on the teen's genitals, and ligature marks on her neck, Acosta said.
"Ni-rape po ito. Pinahirapan po ito," she said, adding that police's initial autopsy was not aided by any equipment.
(She was raped, tortured.)
Sulfuric acid may have also been poured onto the victim's face to hide her identity, said the PAO chief.
It is also possible that animals bit off some of Silawan's internal organs, said Acosta, noting that the teen's body was found in a vacant lot.
A 17-year-old was tagged as a suspect, but he had been ordered released by the Lapu-Lapu City Prosecutor's Office because he was arrested without a warrant. President Rodrigo Duterte has ordered the re-arrest of the teen suspect.
The police are looking into the possibility that the killing could have been an initiation rite of a local fraternity.
