The campaign season for local positions was "generally peaceful" during its kickoff, but was marred by "many" reports of illegal campaign materials, the Commission on Elections said Sunday.

"Okay naman po, generally peaceful. Wala tayong natanggap na report ng untoward incident," Comelec Spokesman James Jimenez said of the local campaign, which started Friday.

(It was okay, generally peaceful. We didn't receive report of any untoward incident.)

The Comelec gave a 3-day deadline for candidates to remove campaign materials that exceed the 2 by 3 feet size limit or were placed outside common areas, he told radio DZMM.

"If they remain at talagang paulit-ulit na nagva-violate ang mga kandidato... mayroong penalty na kulong, fine and of course, disqualification dahil ito ay isang election offense," Jimenez said.

(If they remain and the candidates repeatedly violate our rules, there would be a penalty of imprisonment, fines and of course disqualification because this is an election offense.)
