MWSS seeks cloudseeding as Angat Dam level dips
The Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System said it will formally recommend on Monday cloudseeding operations to ease the decreasing water level at Angat Dam.
The dam, which provides water to Metro Manila and Central Luzon, could hit its critical level of 180 meters in April, state weather bureau PAGASA earlier said.
"Kung may opportunity na mag-cloudseeding, ngayon pa lang mag-cloudseeding tayo para sigurado na continuous ang paglagay ng tubig sa Angat," said MWSS Administrator Reynaldo Velasco.
(If there's an opportunity for cloudseeding, let's do it now to ensure continuous water flow towards Angat.)
The National Water Resources Board (NWRB), he said, takes the lead on cloudseeding operations.
"Today, I am putting it on record that I am already requesting them to do the cloudseeding as I recommended last week doon sa aming meeting para officially walang magsisihan na naman (in our meeting so that there would be no finger-pointing)," Velasco said.
"We are formally writing them about this concern so that it cannot be said na hindi namin inirekomenda ito kasi iyan na lang talaga ang pag-asa (that we didn't recommend it because this is really our only hope)," he added.
The Angat Dam's level is currently between 195 and 196 meters, he said.
NWRB Executive Director Dr. Sevillo David, Jr., meanwhile, said Angat Dam's supply will be sufficient until April, even without rain.
Once the dam hits its critical level, regulators will prioritize water distribution for domestic use over irrigation, he said.
