Pay to use EDSA? MMDA mulls toll

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is studying the possibility of imposing toll on private vehicles traversing EDSA, in a bid to reduce hellish traffic in the key highway.

MMDA Traffic Discipline Office and Traffic Engineering Center Director Neomie Recio, said the idea was inspired by electronic road pricing done in countries like Singapore and the United Kingdom, particularly London.

“It came to our mind that we should have volume reduction in EDSA. We are planning but it is still under study if it will be feasible to implement the electronic road pricing along EDSA,” she said in an interview on ANC’s “Early Edition.”

Recio explained the number of private vehicles in EDSA may be the main cause of congestion. 

“Since private vehicles [are] dominant along EDSA, then this scheme should only be applicable to private vehicles only,” she said.
