President Rodrigo Duterte has pardoned 27 elderly and frail prisoners, the first batch of 100 inmates endorsed for executive clemency, Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II said Monday.

"Ito po ay unang batch lamang, 27 po ito na mga nabigyan ng conditional pardon at commutation of pardon," Aguirre told radio DZMM.

Aguirre said he will give the pardons signed by Duterte in a simple ceremony on Tuesday.

The Justice department's Board of Pardons and Parole is also looking into recommending more inmates for the presidential pardon, he added.

Duterte said in November that he is set to grant executive clemency to inmates aged at least 80 who have served at least 40 years of prison time.

His announcement came after he granted absolute pardon to actor Robin Padilla, restoring the latter's civil and political rights, which may enable him to get a US visa so he can be with his wife and newborn child.
