The immigration bureau said Friday it reshuffled nearly 800 officers as it faced investigation over an alleged bribery scheme for the illegal entry of Chinese workers into the country.

Several immigration officers were accused in a Senate probe last week of pocketing P10,000 for every Chinese national they allowed to enter the country as tourists and work later in gambling hubs.

The bureau changed the shift and airport terminal assignment of some 800 officers, and replaced all team chiefs, said Immigration Spokesperson Dana Sandoval.

The reshuffle is not expected to cause a shortage of personnel before the expected rush of travelers ahead of the Lenten break, she told DZMM.

Lawmakers and the Department of Justice are looking into the so-called "pastillas" bribery scheme, named after rolls of grease money that resemble a sweet delicacy.

The issue is among several reported anomalies hounding the mostly Chinese-run Philippine Offshore Gaming Operator industry, ranging from sex trafficking to corruption.
