Veteran journalist Jiggy Manicad on Tuesday said he sided with the Hugpong ng Pagbabago senatorial slate of Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte because of the latter's decisive leadership.

This was evident, he said, when the mayor punched a court sheriff for disobeying a direct order during a demolition in Agdao district, Davao City in 2011.

"Naniniwala ako kay Mayor Sara (Duterte), 'yung brand of leadership niya. Astig siya, ginulpi niya 'yung sheriff. Ganun talaga ang gusto ng tao. Immediate action pag nagigipit sila," Manicad told ANC's Headstart.

The Davao City mayor made national headlines after video showed her punching Court Sheriff Abe Andres on July 1, 2011 for implementing the demolition despite her direct order to delay it.

As a result, Duterte was suspended for one-month by the Ombudsman and slapped with 2 disbarment cases.

In the interview, Manicad described how he approached the younger Duterte to ask if he could be included in the Hugpong slate. He said he chose to approach Sara instead of President Duterte because the "political campaign is like a war."

The 13-member Hugpong slate is composed of Senate reelectionists and returnees Sonny Angara, Pia Cayetano, JV Ejercito, Jinggoy Estrada, Koko Pimentel, Bong Revilla and Cynthia Villar. New names in the lineup are former Philippine National Police director Ronald dela Rosa, former Special Assistant to the President Bong Go, Rep. Zajid Mangudadatu (Maguindanao), former reporter Jiggy Manicad and former MMDA chair Francis Tolentino.
