A doctor enumerated Thursday some early symptoms of measles, an outbreak of which was observed in Metro Manila and Central Luzon.
Among the first signs of measles are small white spots inside the mouth, said Dr. Rene Louie Gutierrez of the East Avenue Medical Center in Quezon City.
The so-called Koplik spots appear in the mouth 2 to 3 days before red rashes break out in the hairline and spread to the neck, hands and feet, he told radio DZMM.
Measles' first signs also include fever that may last for 4 days, as well as conjuctivitis or reddening of the eyes, he said.
"Kapag nakita na po iyun, ipasuri na agad ang ating pasyente," advised Gutierrez.
(When we observe these, have the patient checked immediately.)
Measles, caused by a virus that infects the respiratory tract, can be passed through direct contact and through the air. Its complications include severe diarrhea, pneumonia, blindness, and even death, said the health department.
Unvaccinated children aged 5 and below are at highest risk of the disease, added Health Undersecretary Eric Domingo.
Free anti-measles vaccine is available in government hospitals and health centers, he said.
