MANILA -- 2GO Shipping Lines Executive Vice President Bimsy Mapa said their M/V St. Thomas Aquinas was hit by cargo ship Sulpicio Express 7, damaging their vessel and causing it to sink off the coast of Talisay City, Cebu Friday night.

"Binangga yung barko natin ng cargo ship," Mapa said in an interview with radio dzMM, adding that their crew followed the traffic separation scheme.

"Sumunod po kami sa scheme na yun," he said.

Mapa said they are deeply saddened by the accident, and promised to provide assistance to the victims.

"Kinalulungkot po namin yung nangyari at handa po kaming magbigay ng tulong para maibsan po yung kawalan nila," he said.

According to 2GO, 25 people were killed in the accident, at least 757 have been rescued while 59 remain unaccounted for.

The Philippine Coast Guard reported, however, that at least 26 people were killed in the ship's sinking.

At least 629 have been rescued while search and rescue efforts continue for 215 passengers and crew who remain missing, the Coast Guard said.
