MANILA - A burglar who jumped into a sewer after snatching a lady's handbag early Tuesday was caught red-handed after firemen flushed him out.

Barangay South Triangle Deputy Ervin Espadilla said he received reports that a suspect, Jonathan Gamboa, and his companion, Efren Garis, grabbed a lady's handbag at around 7 a.m. Tuesday.

Garis was caught by tricycle drivers who ganged up on him while Gamboa ducked into a sewer to avoid arrest.

Authorities then kept watch over both ends of the sewer—in Mother Ignacia Street and on Timog Avenue—as firemen sprayed water into the sewer to flush Gamboa out.

Gamboa was in the sewer for almost two hours before he finally got out.

He first denied his involvement in the crime but later confessed when he got to the police station.

He said he needed the money for food as his wife cheated on him.

Both Garis and Gamboa admitted to having been previously jailed for theft and illegal drug use.

Barangay officials called on the victim to file a case against Gamboa and Garis.—reports from Johnson Manabat, DZMM and Francis Faulve
