MANILA – The head of the Department of Public Works and Highways on Wednesday offered to resign from the government if it is proven that he pocketed even a single centavo for the construction of the allegedly overpriced Iloilo Convention Center.

Speaking to ANC’s Headstart, DPWH Secretary Rogelio Singson denied that he took any money from the construction of the P700 million ICC.

"If Mr. [Manuel] Mejorada can prove that I made a single peso off of this project, I will quit. Plunder means 50 million that somebody pocketed including myself. Excuse me," he said.

He also rejected claims that the ICC is similar to the P2.2 billion Makati City Hall Building II, which is also being constructed by Hilmarc's Construction Corp.

"Excuse me naman. I just keep saying this is not a regular office building or a parking building,. Hitsurang hitsura na lang. We wanted an iconic convention center for Iloilo," he said.

Singson said the DPWH's original estimate was already at P700 million considering the height of the structure, which is comparable to a 7-storey building.

He also denied that the structure only has a total floor area of 6,400 square meters as claimed by former Iloilo provincial administrator Manuel Mejorada.

Instead, he said the estimate should be based on an 11,000-square-meter floor area with an estimated construction cost of P60,000-P65,000 per square meter.

"The building itself if equivalent to about 7 storeys if you compare it with a regular building dahil mataas ito e. Ganun siya kataas. Mataas ang floor to ceiling height. May auditorium ka pa. Hindi naman pwedeng regular height lang," he said.
