MANILA, Philippines – The Commission on Elections is looking into allegations of extortion against its officials for the accreditation of party-list groups.

Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes said a clerk of the Comelec’s Electoral Contest and Adjudication Division was accused by the party-list group Alab ng Mamamayan (ALAM) of trying to extort P3 million to guarantee the group’s accreditation.

Brillantes said the clerk, Rogelio Rañeses, had denied the allegations.

The poll chief questioned the timing of the allegation because it comes after the Comelec disqualified the group from running in the 2013 polls.

The group has filed a motion for reconsideration before the Comelec en banc.
