MANILA - Sen. Grace Poe on Wednesday bared that she is one of many supporters who believe multi-awarded actress Nora Aunor is deserving of the National Artist Award.

Speaking to ANC's Headstart, Poe said Aunor's work in film had greatly influenced how acting is done in the country. She also said the late Comedy King Dolphy and former actress and now Batangas Gov. Vilma Santos are deserving of the honor.

Poe's comments came after President Aquino removed Aunor from the list of nominees for National Artist this year, citing Aunor's drug conviction as reason.

Poe said while she respects the President's decision, she also wants to unburden future presidents "the right to veto any nominee for National Artist because it has gone through a process already."

She said the nomination process has become highly politicized.

Poe's father, the late actor Fernando Poe Jnr, was also named National Artist by then President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. However, Poe's wife, Susan Roces, refused to accept the award from Mrs. Arroyo.
