MANILA, Philippines - There will be no celebration for now among the House prosecutors after the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona led to his conviction.

Lead prosecutor Niel Tupas Jr. said he felt sorry for Corona and wished he had just resigned instead of undergoing so much hardship in the past 5 months.

"Personally naawa ako sa kanya. He had to undergo all of this. Sana nag-resign na lang siya. Pero hindi na rin siya pwedeng mag resign dun sa dulo dahil nahirapan na tayong lahat e. It should have been from the beginning. We had the goods against him and we were dead serious about the process," he told [email protected]

Tupas said he had nothing personal against the chief magistrate except for his personal conviction that he should be removed.

He said he felt sorry for Corona's loved ones who were also affected by the prolonged trial.

Tupas said the prosecution team had considered calling in Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales as a witness after receiving tips from various sources that Corona had so many dollar deposits.

He said that until now, he does not know why the defense team summoned Morales as a hostile witness.
