MANILA - Sr. Mary John Mananzan, former chairperson of the Association of Major Religious Superiors of the Philippines, on Saturday explained why Pope Francis once told nuns not to be "old maids."

In an interview with radio DZMM, Sr. Mary John said the Pope apologized in advance for using "politically incorrect" words in talking to nuns during the International Union of Superiors General.

"You know what he said to the religious? 'I am sorry to talk this way but I would like to ask you as nuns, as celibates, not to be old maids,'" she recalled the Pope as saying.

She said the Pope then added: "Your celibacy must be fruitful. It must not be a barren celibacy."

Sr. Mary John said the pope has an aura that has had a tremendous impact on the nation.

She said the Pope has already given instructions to the religious to be prophets, people of joy, communion experts and ambassadors of Christ.
