MANILA - Pope Francis had a light moment during his first Mass in the Philippines after churchgoers answered him enthusiastically while he was reading from the Scripture.

At the start of his homily, the Pope was quoting from John 21 when Jesus asked Peter: "Do you love me?"

"Do you love me?" asked the Pope, which was answered by an enthusiastic "Yes!" by the crowd.

He then answered: "Thank you very much!", making churchgoers, composed of priests and nuns, laugh and applaud.

He then said: "I read the words of Jesus. 'Do you love me? Then feed my sheep."

Pope Francis called on priests to live a life of poverty so they can identify with the poor.

He said the Filipino clergy should be "ambassadors for Christ" and said the Church should combat inequality in Philippine society.
