Authorities are bracing themselves for their biggest security challenge yet when Pope Francis arrives in the Philippines this Thursday.

They said they are doing everything possible to secure the pope and the millions of devotees expected to swarm the papal venues in Manila and Leyte.

For a pope known to be full of surprises, CBCP president Fr. Francis Lucas said they cannot leave anything to chance.

Interior Secretary Mar Roxas said 40,000 personnel will be deployed to ensure peace and order during the papal visit.

Roxas recalled police were overwhelmed in 1995 during Pope John Paul II's visit for the World Youth Day when the planned motorcade did not pan out because of the massive crowd, and they had to bring the pontiff in and out via chopper.

Both Roxas and Lucas appealed to the public to cooperate with security forces.
