"You can choose the life that you want." This was Janicel Lubina's answer when asked to recall the time she worked as a household helper in her native Palawan.

In an interview on "Aquino & Abunda Tonight" that aired Friday, the newly crowned Binibining Pilipinas-International said the opportunity to change her life came as a stroke of luck, which she made sure to maximize.

Lubina, 19, said she was on her way to her mother, who is also a "kasambahay," when a makeup artist came across her in her hometown of Narra. The man, who eventually became his handler, encouraged her to join pageants.

In 2013, she finished runner-up to Megan Young in the national Miss World pageant. She was also crowned Miss Bikini Philippines in the same year.

The latest in her string of achievements -- winning one of five crowns in Binibining Pilipinas -- makes her the country's representative to this year's Miss International competition.
