MANILA -- An ophthalmologist on Friday advised Filipinos to rest their eyes when using gadgets to avoid digital eye strain during this lockdown.

In an interview with DZMM, Dr. Cheryl Arcinue said our eyes tend not to blink when in front of phones, computers and other gaming devices for a long time which can cause digital eye strain.

"Instead of normally blinking para mabasa ‘yong mata natin, ‘pag nakatitig ka [sa gadgets], focus na focus ka, nagda-dry po ‘yong mata," she explained.

Common symptoms of digital eye strain are reddening of eyes, eye sore, and teary eyes, while severe symptoms include headache and pain in the eyes and neck, she said.

Arcinue said children should be on their screens for a maximum of 30 minutes only and then they should rest their eyes immediately. You can allow them to use their gadgets later on for another round.

She also advised to follow the 20-20-20 rule where every 20 minutes, adults should rest their eyes for 20 seconds or look at objects 20 feet away in order to rest their eyes.

The doctor also advised people to apply a cold compress on their eyes to rest.
