MANILA – Although rocker Bamboo Manalac didn’t turn his chair for him, 16-year-old Japs Mendoza still got to perform with his idol on Sunday’s episode of “The Voice of the Philippines.”

The teenager from Bulacan performed Bamboo’s hit “Truth” saying, “Idol ko talaga si Bamboo at feel na feel ko ‘yung groove ng song na ito.”

The judges noticed similarities between Bamboo and Mendoza, although it was only Broadway actress Lea Salonga who turned her chair for the contestant. “This is moldable, I love it,” she said.

“I will teach you how to find your own voice. That’s why I’m so excited I turned my chair for you,” she told the contestant.

After his audition, Bamboo gamely joined Mendoza on stage for a reprise of “Truth” – a performance that Salonga said “justified” her decision to pick the young contestant. -- "The Voice of the Philippines," July 14, 2013
