MANILA -- It was 1953 when actress Edna Luna first portrayed the Pinay mermaid "Dyesebel" created by Mars Ravelo. After 20 years, Dyesebel returned to big screen with Vilma Santos as the lead star.

In 1978, Alma Moreno also portrayed the mermaid, while beauty queen Alice Dixon donned the Dyesebel costume in 1990.

"Nung time ko kasi hindi pa nakakagawa ng underwater Dyesebel so nagpasadya si Mother Lily ng buntot na pwede ilubog sa tubig. So that was my make-or-break movie," recalled Dixon.

Actress Carmina Villaroel was only 12 years old when she played the young Dyesebel.

"Talagang ang hirap pagsuot mo pa 'yung buntot kasi mabigat nung panahon na 'yon, '80s pa 'yon, alam mo naman yung technology. Mahirap pero very thankful ako na at one point in my career ay naging young Dyesebel ako," Villaroel said.

In 1996, Charlene Gonzales also played Dyesebel.

"There was a scene na parang from one end lalangoy ako ng mga 10 to 15 feet pero we were 20 to 30 feet under the water tapos tatanggalin ko 'yung air tank tapos lalanguyin ko sa kabila. Pero after kapag nakita mo na 'yung kabuuan matutuwa ka talaga," Gonzales said.

Now, after 60 years, actress Anne Curtis promised to give her all to play the well-loved Pinoy mermaid.
