The province of Cebu may soon become the next top Philippine tourist destination, the head of a European trade group said Friday.

Guenter Taus, chair of the European Chamber of Commerce in the Philippines, said that with concerns over the possible closure of Boracay island, tourists may soon start flocking to the Queen City of the South.

"If I look forward, around a year or 2 to 3, I believe Cebu will be the hub of choice," he told ANC.

Taus explained that foreigners may take direct flights to Cebu and that the province can also serve as a gateway to other vacation spots in the Visayas.

"You're in Visayas already and you're really in the heart of the country where water and water sports and anything else lends itself to be participated in," he added.

One of the most developed provinces in the Philippines, Cebu is home to many picturesque beaches and historical sights.
