The Philippines can compete in the international high-end coffee market, a founding trustee of the Philippine Coffee Board said Tuesday.

Bill Luz, who is also chairman of the National Competitiveness Council, said that while the country is not a major source of coffee in terms of volume, it can be a source of premium coffee as local coffee growers and processors become more sophisticated amid changing consumer tastes.

"Consumers are getting more demanding and more finicky, a little bit like wine drinkers," Luz said on ANC's Market Edge.

Luz said that many coffee consumers are now very particular about whether the coffee they are drinking came from the Cordillera region, Bukidnon or Cavite.

Many local coffee growers, processors, distributors and aficionados are expected to attend the 10th National Coffee Summit on October 24, 2017, at the SMX Convention Center in Davao City.
