MANILA - Rebuilding Marawi City could cost up to $8 billion (P410 billion) and take up to 50 years, an architect and urban planner said Tuesday.

Marawi has been "liberated" from Islamic State-inspired extremists, President Rodrigo Duterte said Tuesday, after nearly 5 months of fighting.

Instead of rebuilding devastated parts of Marawi, the government should build another city around the former battle zone, architect Jun Palafox told ANC's Market Edge.

Palafox said he saw first-hand the devastation in Marawi and that it would be better to keep the ruins as a memorial.

He cited the example of Hiroshima, which opted to preserve ground zero of an atomic bombing as a memorial to World War II.
