MANILA - The Bureau of Immigration on Sunday said it would launch a program that will closely monitor overstaying foreign nationals amid a rise of illegal foreign workers in the country.

“Basically, this will now provide us information of those foreign nationals who came here and overstayed and did not apply for extension," Immigration deputy spokesperson Melvin Mabulac told ANC's Dateline Philippines.

"It will be in our system and the information will be provided to our intelligence division who will conduct operations."

Over 270 illegal Chinese workers were arrested in a raid in Pasig City, while more than 320 undocumented Chinese nationals were nabbed in Palawan this month.

The bureau added it will strictly implement immigration rules amid a ban of online gambling in Cambodia which is seen to draw more foreign workers to the Philippines.

“It’s not within our jurisdiction to prohibit the entry (of Philippine offshore gaming operators) but for those foreign nationals who are working here in the POGO industry, we can only process their documents,” Mabulac said.
