MANILA - A lot of people will want Apple's iPhone X as it is going to be a status symbol, the editor of a popular tech news website said Friday.

Roger Cheng, CNET Executive Editor for News, said the iPhone X, which sells for $999 for the 64GB model, is one of the most expensive phones available.

He added that the "true cost" of the iPhone X will be $1150, which is the price of the 256GB version. "It's hard to get and it's more expensive than every other phone," Cheng told ANC's Early Edition.

Cheng added that while some of the design features of the iPhone X are not exactly new, Apple's new flagship is still a step up for the company.

"It's a unique design for sure. It's one that stands out, that's why Apple is counting on people to want to buy this phone because it looks so different from the other iPhones."

Cheng however said that for most Apple fans, the less heralded iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus may be more attractive.

"For a lot of people this might be the main phone they end buying because they are more affordable and more easily available," he said.

The iPhone X starts shipping in the U.S. on Nov. 3, but supplies are expected to be extremely limited.

The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus meanwhile will become available on Sept. 22.
