The Department of Information and Communications Technology on Tuesday said it has asked the Bank of the Philippine Islands and BDO Unibank to undergo formal investigations following glitches the banks encountered recently.

Secretary Rodolfo Salalima, chair of the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC), said he asked National Privacy Commission Chairman Mon Liboro to "conduct a formal verification" on the mess even after representatives from BPI assured them that theirs was no hacking job.

BPI, the country's third largest lender, shut down its electronic channels for two days this month to fix an internal error that caused double posting of some transactions.

A week later, its rival, BDO, called on depositors to report cases of ATM "skimming." Salalima said he also instructed his men to "look into...particularly yung sa ATM."

The Senate is set to investigate the issue on Wednesday.
