MANILA, Philippines - President Benigno Aquino III's campaign against corruption alone won't be enough to reduce poverty in the country, an economist said Tuesday.

Dr. Ernie Pernia of the University of the Philippines' School of Economics said on ANC's The Rundown that aside from bad governance, the other main causes of poverty and hunger are weak economic growth, as well as income and wealth inequality.

He said rapid population growth also worsens the situation.

The country's poorer neighbors in Asia could overtake the Philippines in a few years if it won't have a firm population policy in place, Pernia said. - ANC
