MANILA - Passengers of the LRT-1 can feel the holiday spirit in their commute when they step into a Christmas-themed version of the train this December.

The light rail launched its so-called Christmas train Friday by taking around 50 orphans from the Hospicio De San Jose and the Pangarap Foundation on a round trip. They were later treated to a Christmas program which culminated in a tree-lighting at the Liwasang Bonifacio in Manila.

The exterior of the train was hardly altered except for the stained glass design and images on the windows.

Inside, silver-colored parol, Christmas balls, and pine tree leaves adorned the upper portions of the train.

The poles were wrapped in colorful stained-glass-inspired designs.

"Maganda ho na natutuwa sila at least for the Christmas season, at nakikita nila na kahit konti mayroon kaming Christmas spirit o Christmas cheer na mapapakita sa kanila," said Juan Alfonso, LRMC president and CEO.

"'Yung regular commute natin, minsan mahaba, matagal, so gawin na lang ho natin siyang fun and kakaiba siguro sa ibang klaseng commute."

Meanwhile, the window designs feature translucent images of churches and other tourist attractions in parts of Metro Manila which could be reached through the LRT.

The Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC) said these were part of their "Ikot Manila" campaign to encourage people to go around the metropolis.

Commuters with smartphones can capture the QR codes on the displays beside the featured locations to access information about the destinations.

This is the third year the LRT unveiled a Christmas-themed train. Candy canes were the inspiration for last year's design.

The train will ply the LRT-1's route from Baclaran to Monumento daily throughout the month of December.
