Following a spike in the number of local cases of the novel coronavirus disease, President Duterte announced Thursday that the National Capital Region will be placed under community quarantine from March 15 to April 14 to stop the spread of COVID-19.

Operation of mass public transports such as the Light Rail Transits, The Metro Rail Transit, and the Philippine National Railways were not suspended but the Transportation department was tasked to issue a guideline that would ensure “social distancing” among commuters to prevent the spread of the illness.

The MRT -3 management announced on Friday the implementation of “social distancing” to address the concern. Regular train commuters had to queue for more than 1 hour to get into the trains as MRT limits entry of commuters to the platforms to avoid overcrowding inside the coaches. The train operators also gave assurance that the coaches and train stations are regularly sanitized and disinfected for the riding public’s safety.
