Prices of School Supplies: 2018 vs 2019
With the opening of classes in public schools next week, parents and students alike have been busy shopping for school supplies.
They will have to tighten their belt, however, because despite the easing of inflation this year from a decade high in 2018, the cost of school materials this year has risen compared to last year.
This is based on the Department of Trade and Industry’s annual bulletin of suggested retail prices (SRP) for 10 essential school materials: pencil, sharpener, eraser, ball pen, writing pad, intermediate pad, composition notebook, writing notebook, spiral notebook and crayons.
The average cost of a sharpener rose by 55 percent, from P9.83 last year to P15.25 this year. This is followed by a pack of three pencils and intermediate pad paper, with 43-percent and 26-percent increase, respectively.
ABS-CBN tracked the increase in prices of school materials by computing the average SRPs of materials under each product category with the same unit, such as notebooks with 80 leaves, 16-piece boxes of crayons, one-hole sharpeners, and the like, regardless of brand.
