Why Pacquiao must slay this evil
Fighting corruption in his own basketball league is one battle Senator Manny Pacquiao must win.
The Philippines' boxing pride must slay this evil in his own backyard, the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL), and save the popular league.
Fortunately, the MPBL has taken concrete steps in running after those involved. Last week, it filed multiple counts of game-fixing charges against 21 members of the Soccsksargen Marlins who were allegedly involved in point-shaving and other anomalies.
According to the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), a Chinese financier dictated the team's scores for gambling purposes.
The Soccsksargen Marlins suspiciously lost all their games from July to October this year.
Those who took part in alleged game-fixing schemes were reportedly paid as much as P40,000 per game, while the Chinese operator earned millions from the scam.
Pacquiao should also look into other problems in the young basketball league, including alleged contract violations that go against the welfare of players and coaches.
Pacquiao already has so many accolades in the sports field, but he also needs to show administrative capability.
A corrupt-free and well-run basketball league could be this feather in his cap.
