Mariano rules Open Blitz Chess

MANILA, Philippines – Untitled Nelson Mariano III dominated the Open division of the 6th Gathering of Knights and Kings (Fianchetto Blitz Chess Tournament) at the Ramon Magsaysay Cubao High School in Quezon City on Friday.

Fondly called ”Elo” in the chess world, Mariano edged 12-time national open champion GM Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. in the fourth, International Master Barlo Nadera in the fifth, Philippine and US chess master Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr. in the sixth then drew with GM Oliver Barbosa in the final round to capture the Open division title.

The Bacoor, Cavite resident Mariano is the younger brother of GM Nelson Mariano and Woman International Master Cristine Rose Mariano.

Mariano and Barbosa both finished undefeated with 6.5 points on six wins and draw in seven outings, but the former won by virtue of a higher 32.5 tie break points against the latter's 29.5 points.

Rounding up the Top 11 were 3rd placer Antonio (6 points), 4th placer Nadera ( 6 points), 5th placer FM David Elorta (6 points), 6th placer IM Rolando Nolte (6 points), 7th placer Jerad Docena (5.5 points), 8th placer FM Jony Habla (5.5 points), 9th placer Bernardino (5.5 points), 10th placer Noel dela Cruz (5.5 points) and 11th placer Michael Mallari (5.5 points).

Adjudged category winners were National Master Elias Lao (top senior), Norvin Gravillo (top junior), and Bernadette Galas (top lady).

The 6th Gathering of Knights and Kings was hosted by Cesar Iligan and organized by Fianchetto Realty Development Corporation.

Asia’s First GM Eugene Torre was the event’s Project Director while International Arbiter Gene Poliarco served as chief arbiter. He was assisted by national arbiters Alex Dinoy, Alfredo Chay and Milo Samaniego.

Meanwhile, Lawrence Magura yielded to Daryl Unix Samantila in the final canto but still emerged overall champion in the kiddies division.
