Gretchen Ho has been selected to participate in the torch relay for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the ABS-CBN media personality announced on social media Saturday.
There are about 10,000 torchbearers expected to join the relay in Japan. Applications made open to the public started in June.
The relay, scheduled to begin with the lighting of the Olympic flame in Olympia, Greece, will be held around the country, the birthplace of the Games.
The flame is then transported to the host country where a torch relay is conducted until the opening ceremony, the official Games website says.
The Japan relay, which will start on March 26, 2020 at Fukushima prefecture, will run for 121 days.
The Tokyo Olympics open on July 24, 2020.
The theme of next year's torch relay in Japan will be "Hope Lights our Way."
According to the Games press release: "In 2020, the Olympic flame will not only symbolize the sunrise of a new era spreading the hope that will light our way, but will also serve to spread the joy and passion of the Japanese around the Olympic movement as the Games approach."
In Japan, the Olympic flame will first be put on display at various locations in the Tohoku region, to underscore the message of hope in areas affected by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.
