Two strong seasons as coach of the Los Angeles Sparks convinced management that coach Derek Fisher is ready for an expanded role.

So the Sparks, as part of Fisher signing a contract extension, added general manager duties to his plate Tuesday.

"I'm honored to be named general manager of the LA Sparks and continue my role as head coach," Fisher said in a statement.

"This organization has a dynamic history, the most passionate fans in the WNBA, and an ownership group committed to success on and off the court. I'm thankful for the opportunity and excited to guide this team as we pursue a fourth WNBA title."

In two seasons as the Sparks' coach Fisher has compiled a 37-19 record.

The Sparks have qualified for the postseason each season, but the franchise's fourth WNBA championship has proven elusive. In Fisher's first season the Sparks lost to Connecticut in the WNBA semifinals in 2019; last season they lost to the Sun in the second round.

Fisher previously played 18 seasons in the NBA and coached the New York Knicks for 136 games over two seasons.

In another front-office move, the Sparks promoted Michael Fischer from assistant general manager to vice president of player personnel.
