MANILA—Wushu star and Southeast Asian Games gold medalist Agatha Wong on Saturday called for the strict application of a law mandating businesses to provide discounts for athletes who win in international competitions.
"Can we make R.A. 10699 on the national athlete’s discount benefits an imposed & required law to abide by?" Wong tweeted without mentioning any specific incident that triggered the comment.
"Gets quite annoying to keep having to explain to managers that this kind of benefit actually exists & some are even doubtful. U think amalayer (I'm a liar)?"
Under Republic Act (RA) 10699, also known as "National Athletes and Coaches Benefits and Incentives Act", Filipino athletes recognized and accredited by the Philippine Olympic Committee and the Philippine Sports Commission who medal in international competitions shall be entitled to cash rewards.
They are also entitled to a "grant of 20% discount from all establishments relative to the utilization of transportation services, hotels and other lodging establishments, restaurants and recreation centers and purchase of medicine and sports equipment anywhere in the country for the actual and exclusive use or enjoyment of the national athlete and coach."
This is besides the "minimum of 20% discount on admission fees charged by theaters, cinema houses and concert halls, circuses, carnivals, and other similar places of culture, leisure and amusement for the actual and exclusive use and enjoyment of the national athlete and coach."
Penalties and fines await businesses that do not comply with those specific provisions.
