MANILA -- Five E-sports games, including Dota 2 and Mobile Legends, have been shortlisted by Philippine sports officials for medal awards in the upcoming Southeast Asian Games in 2019.
In a press release Friday, the Philippine SEA Games Organizing Committee and its partner Razer announced the 5 games played on PC, mobile, Xbox, and PlayStation.
The 5 games, which will be open to teams of both men and women, are listed below:
- Dota 2
- StarCraft II
- Mobile Legends: Bang Bang
- Arena of Valor
- Tekken 7
Physical and mental intensity, strategy and teamwork, and the level of popularity and competitiveness were considered in choosing the games, Razer said.
The committee and its partner are still evaluating a sixth and final game for the console category.
Last Nov. 27, sports officials announced that eSports will be a medal event at the 2019 SEA Games, which will be the first of its kind in the international sports scene.
Esports was already included in the 2018 Asian Games but only as a demonstration sport and not as a medal event. It was a trial run for inclusion as an exhibition event in the Paris 2024 Olympics.
