MANILA -- Following a victorious run in the recently concluded Southeast Asian Games, Filipino athletes continue to reap medals in international sporting events.

Philippine climber Gerald Verosil, 18, clinched a bronze medal in the Asian Youth Championships 2019 in Bengaluru, India over the weekend.

He placed third in the Male Juniors Lead category, which was dominated by Japanese athletes Sohta Amagasa and Yuta Imaizumi who won gold and silver, respectively.

Verosil also placed fourth in the Male Juniors Bouldering category.

Meanwhile, 16-year-old Derille Pagayon also entered the finals of Female Youth Lead and Bouldering categories, but failed to make a podium finish.

It is the first time the Philippine National Climbing Team sent a youth team to an international competition since 2016.

"We hope that their victory inspires many more youth climbers here in the Philippines to climb stronger. With Gerald and Derille leading the way of next generation climbers, the future looks bright," the team said in a statement.
