MANILA -- Dikembe Mutombo is somewhere in the world right now, but he's definitely not in the country. And he wasn't robbed either. And neither does he need your money.
The Hall of Fame center went on Instagram on Wednesday to confirm that an email being circulated that he's in some sort of trouble did not come from him.
Reddit user r/pleasefeedthedino posted the contents of the email slugged "Request for assistance-strictly confidential.
The note begins: "I am Dikembe Mutombo Mpolondo Mukamba Jean-Jacques Wamutombo, the 2nd all-time leader in basketball blocks. Am stranded here in Manila, PHILIPPINES since last night. I was robbed on my way to the basketball courts and I am now in custody of the national basketball authority pending when I make payment on outstanding bills I owe. I have been signing basketballs for days while also being used to sex women to father the next generation of PHILIPPINES basketball players. They do not understand that no means no no no no no."
It continues: "Please help me by money transfer to email@example.com without delay, while I wait to hear from you. Thanks once again for your kindness may God guide and reward you in all your endeavors as you make me realize my dreams and wishes of returning to my house, as I am not in my house.
"Your beloved friend,
"Real Dikembe Mutombo"
Whoever is behind the scam was really bold to use the name of a really famous person. The message itself is full of inconsistencies and totally bizarre claims that it should be easy to see this as nothing but a racket. Let's all hope nobody fell for this.
