MANILA -- Indonesia’s Mobile Legends: Bang Bang team had player and bracket playoff advantage coming into the Southeast Asian Games gold medal match, while bronze medalists Malaysia were top seeds in the qualifiers.

The Philippines, on the other hand, had bannered players from 3 different teams, and drew in its qualifier matches against Vietnam and Indonesia to enter the lower bracket. In the finals, Sibol had to climb back as Indonesia reached match point to finally strike the gold medal.

To top it all off, they only had two months to prepare, Sibol’s ML:BB manager Jab Escutin admitted to reporters.

“It was an uphill battle for all of us and it was amazing that we did this with 2-months practice, compared to the Indonesian team which probably had a year or so,” Escutin said.

Indonesia paraded 4 players from Mobile Legends world champions EVOS Legends, the very first team to win the tournament organized by game developers Moonton.

The other player hailed from Onic Esports, which won the Philippine-based Mobile Legends Southeast Asian Cup held last October.

The Philippines, on the other hand, was parading players from Cignal Ultra, ArkAngel, and Bren Esports, which all had to juggle schedules with their franchise teams, head coach Brian “Coach Panda” Lim said in a separate interview.

“Honestly we had so many schedules in between. So we had a hard time scheduling our practices for the Sibol tournament. But we never quit,” he said.

But the grit of the Pinoy players paid off, Escutin said, noting that the win was “one for the history books.”
