SUBIC BAY – The Philippine Dragonboat team finished third behind Indonesia on the second day of the boat races here in Malawaan Park on Saturday.
The team was forced to take bronze in the mixed 22-seater 200m against first placer Thailand and runnerup Indonesia.
The Philippine paddlers clocked in at 41:527 behind Indonesia (40.592). Thailand finished at 39.792 while Myanmar settled for fourth with a time of 41.907.
Still, Canoe-Kayak Dragonboat coach Len Escollante focused on the positives of the team’s performance.
“’Yung 22-seater natin last year when we were in the ICF Dragonboat Championships, ‘yung time nila dun nasa 43 seconds so na-beat nila ‘yung own record nila this time, 41 seconds,” said Collantes.
“But that was good for bronze lang ngayon.”
The Philippines also finished fourth in the women’s 4-seater 200m.
Colllantes hopes the team does better in the long-distance races set on Sunday when they return for the mixed 22-seater 1000m, men’s 4-seater 500m and mixed 22-seater 500m.
“I hope maka-recover sila tomorrow. Two events natin bukas ‘yung 500 at 1000,” she said. “Direct to finals na ‘yun.”
The Canoe-Kayak team, which also covers dragonboat, earlier won a gold and 2 silvers in canoe-kayak.
Hermie Macaranas won gold in the men's canoe singles 200m aside from winning silver in the men's canoe singles 1000m. He also teamed up with Ojay Fuentes for another silver in the men's canoe doubles 200m.
