SUBIC BAY (UPDATED) -- The Philippine canoe-kayak team won gold and silver on the second day of competitions here in Malawaan Park on Saturday.

Hermie Macaranas outpaddled his competitors in the men’s canoe 200m finals to snare the gold a day after winning the silver medal in the canoe men’s singles 1000m event.

He finished with a time of 43:600 ahead of Myanmar’s Hlaing Wing Myo (43:740), Vietnam’s Duc Duong Ahn (44:330) and Indonesia’s Spens Stuber Mehue (DNF).

Macaranas, the team captain of the country’s dragonboat squad, later added a silver medal together with Ojay Fuentes in the canoe men’s doubles 200m finals.

They clocked in at 41:081 behind the Indonesian pair of Mehue Stuber and Marjuki Marjuki (40:338)

“Hindi ko po madescribe ang pakiramdam,” said the 24-year-old Macaranas. “Pero ginto talaga ng goal natin lalo’t sa Pilipinas tayo naglaro.”

Fuentes, for his part, is proud of their improvement as they only nabbed bronze in the same event last SEA Games.

“Masaya kasi first time lang kaming mag-silver at gold sa event namin, so this is history. Last SEA Games namin bronze lang nakuha namin. Masaya talaga at nagimprove kami,”

Macaranas on Friday clocked in 04:21.67 to win the silver in the men’s 1000m. He outpaddled third placer Marjuki of Indonesia who ended the race with a record of 04:24.21.
