MANILA--Francis Casey Alcantara and Jeson Patrombon beat fellow Filipinos Treat Huey and Ruben Gonzales Jr., 7-6, 7-5, to win the men's doubles gold medal in Southeast Asian Games tennis at Rizal Memorial Sports Complex on Saturday.
The two pairs went back and forth in the opening set, which went to a tiebreaker. Alcantara and Patrombon ran away in the extension 6-2 to go up.
Things were tight once again in the second set, with neither duo able to build a comfortable advantage. In the end, however, it was Alcantara and Patrombon who prevailed, taking the set and match after a miscue by Gonzales.
"Sobrang happy and thankful. Kudos to Treat and Ruben, they played really good, too. And alam naman natin sa finals, isa lang talaga ang mananalo, and luckily, we got the win today," said Alcantara. "To my partner too, thank you, Jeson."
Patrombon added: "Sa umpisa, siyempre nape-pressure kami, maski teammates din namin 'yung kalaban namin, nape-pressure din kami kasi first time namin na mag-finals sa panahon namin na mag-partner.
"Nagpapasalamat ako dahil nanalo kami, at maganda yung nilaro namin ni Niño, and congratulations to Ruben and Treat."
Alcantara and Patrombon beat Timor Leste's Patricio Jose Ferreira and Antonio Mendes in the opening round before taking down Indonesia's David and Ignatius Susanto in the quarterfinals.
In the semifinals, Alcantara and Patrombon bested Vietnam's Daniel Cao Nguyen and Van Phuong Nguyen.
Huey and Denise Dy (mixed doubles) last gave the Philippines gold in SEA Games tennis in 2015.
