MANILA, Philippines—De La Salle-Zobel outlasted National University in a five-set thriller to close in on the championship in the UAAP Season 81 girls' volleyball tournament Wednesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Junior Lady Spikers hacked out a hard-earned 25-23, 28-26, 13-25, 19-25, 15-13 triumph over the defending champions, with Angel Canino leading the way by scoring 18 points.
Alleiah Malaluan chipped in 16 points and 14 digs as the Junior Lady Spikers snatched the 1-0 lead in the best-of-3 finals.
Game 2 is on Sunday at the same venue.
La Salle-Zobel is looking to clinch its first title since completing a three-peat in 2013, with a powerhouse roster bannered by Kianna Dy and Dawn Macandili. If successful, it would be the Junior Lady Spikers' 10th title.
Sheena Toring and Evangeline Alinsug each scored 16 markers while Faith Nisperos and Mhicaela Belen contributed 13 and 12 points, respectively, for the five-peat seeking Bullpups.
