MANILA, Philippines—The Philippine billiards players produced contrasting results in the Southeast Asian Games at the Manila Hotel Tent on Thursday.
Dennis Orcollo advanced to the quarterfinals Thursday afternoon, battling past Brunei's Abu Bakar Muhammad Azim in the men's 10-ball singles.
Orcollo won 9-4, but not before squandering several chances to wrap up the match early. He twice failed to sink the 10-ball in the 12th frame, allowing Azim to extend the match.
The former world champion took care of business in the 13th, though, pouncing on an error by his opponent to seal the deal.
But Luis Saberdo could not get it done against Vietnam's Pham Hoai Nam in English billiards. He lost in five sets 3-2 after wasting a one-set advantage.
The Vietnamese grabbed the last two frames, 100-86 and 100-70, to advance to the last 8.
Carlo Biado later joined Orcollo in the quarterfinals after a 9-4 triumph over Malaysia's Darryl Chia.
