MANILA—House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano on Wednesday said he wants to put together a bid for the Philippines to host the 2030 Asian Games.

Cayetano, also the chairman of the Southeast Asian Games organizing committee (PHISGOC), said he will consult President Rodrigo Duterte before proceeding.

“I'm preparing a long memo to the President and I talked to the (Philippine Olympic Committee) president kagabi, kay Congressman Bambol Tolentino,” Cayetano said.

“(Tolentino) will write and ask if we can bid. And if we do win that bid, ang magho-host hindi pa nga next admin, the admin after next batch. So we will have a good 10-year period, 2020 to 2030.”

Cayetano added that he can recommend a plan to prepare for the Asian Games.

“Ang maganda sa Asian Games, hindi kailangan all in the same area,” he said.

“So for Asian Games you can actually build Visayas-Mindanao facilities and Southern and Northern Luzon. Kasi tayo hindi tayo talaga magbi-build unless sigurado tayong may dadating, ganun minsan ang ugali natin. So maganda na meron tayong tina-target 10 years from now.”

Cayetano said hosting international sports competitions has a lot of benefits.

“So industriya, malaking pera rin at trabaho ang papasok sa Pilipino kapag naayos ang ating sports tourism at sports-related,” he said. — With a report from RG Cruz, ABS-CBN News
