MANILA - Vice President Leni Robredo on Saturday expressed her support for Filipino athletes and the country during the 2019 SEA Games opening ceremony at the Philippine Arena in Bulacan.

"Nakaka-proud maging Pinoy! Maraming salamat sa ating mga atleta, world champions, mga tagapagtanghal, and to everyone behind the #SEAGames2019 opening ceremony," she tweeted.

"Ang dami nating maipagmamalaki bilang isang bansa—at pinakamalakas tayo kapag ang alab ng puso ay iisa🇵🇭 #WeWinAsOne."

The traditional parade of athletes saw more than 5,000 athletes from 11 countries on center stage.

Team Philippines was led by 2020 Olympic pole-vaulter EJ Obiena and Asian Games champion Margielyn Didal.

Filipino history books seemingly became alive after local sports legends Alvin Patrimonio, Efren "Bata" Reyes, Mansueto "Onyok" Velasco, Lydia de Vega, Bong Coo, Paeng Nepomuceno, Eric Buhain and Akiko Thomson were called up to carry the SEA Games Federation flag.

President Rodrigo Duterte led the opening ceremony and was joined by the Sultan of Brunei, Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, whose nephews are part of his country's delegation to the Games.
