MANILA, Philippines – San Beda College overpowered a listless Emilio Aguinaldo College, 11-0, to kick off its bid for a sixth consecutive championship in the NCAA Season 91 men's football tournament at the Rizal Memorial Field.
Ralph Abriol had four goals, including two in the first half as the Red Lions ran out to a 5-0 lead. He had another two in the second when they put the Generals away for good for their first win of the season.
"We really went for a big win because we want this first game to dictate what it's going to be like for us this season," San Beda assistant coach Christopher Pediamonte said.
Miguel Caindec opened the scoring for San Beda with a quick strike in just the eighth minute, before Abriol scored a brace in the span of 12 minutes starting in the 13th, which set the tone for the rout.
For Pediamonte, the unsung hero of the game was skipper Michael Asong, who was influential in keeping the team together with his veteran leadership.
"The good thing about this team is that anyone can step up when called upon. But if there's a player that I consider most influential, it's definitely Asong," the coach said.
In the other match, Arellano University crushed Mapua Institute of Technology, 6-1, to jumpstart its title bid.
