Sisi Rondina and Bernadeth Pons open SEA Games competition in Subic, when the duo compete in beach volleyball at Subic Bay Tennis Court on Friday.
Rondina and Pons join the pairs of Dzi Gervacio and Dji Rodriguez in women's competition, while the men's side is represented by playing partners Edmar Bonono and Jude Garcia, and Jaron Requinton-James Buytrago.
The women play Timor Leste at 9 a.m.
Beach volleyball was last played in the SEA Games in 2011, and the last time the Philippines secured a medal — courtesy of Heidi Ilustre and Diane Pascua's bronze — was when the country hosted in 2005.
The 2019 teams had a timely warm-up when they participated in the Rebisco Beach Volleyball International Open at Sands SM By The Bay, a stint they believe will boost their medal hopes.
"The Philippine beach volleyball teams have been staying in Subic since last Friday (Nov. 22), training and preparing hard for the games," team manager Charo Soriano said.
"We are fortunate to be able to be at the venue early and we are scheduling training both in the morning and in the evening so the athletes can get used to the sand and lighting conditions."
Subic hosts 17 of the 56 sports in these Games, including water events, such as canoe and kayak, dragon boat race, sailing, traditional boat race, triathlon and duathlon, and windsurfing.
